The Electric Kettle.

I went down to the house yesterday to check on my extremely handsome son George and the doggies and the cats. Everything was in order, except that the electric kettle was outside on the back door step.

"Why is the kettle outside George?"

"It was making a funny noise and smoking Dad."

It looked perfectly all right to me so I took it indoors filled it with water and switched it on. EHS George and I watched to see what would happen. After a couple of minutes it began to boil and bubble.

"That's the noise it made Dad."

"It always makes that noise when it boils son. All kettles do that."

"It's smoking now Dad. Why is it smoking?"

"That isn't smoke son. That is steam. Steam comes out of kettles when they boil."

EHS George is off to university next September! To be fair to him though he never drinks tea or coffee so hasn't had much chance to become acquainted with the intricate and mysterious world of the electric kettle. He is only eighteen years old after all!

In case you are wondering why he switched it on in the first place. He clicked it on accidentally while he was making some toast. He knows about toasters!

Happy New Year!

  3. You might need to give him a few lessons on the practicalities of life. Teach him how to iron his clothes and wash his underpants :o)

  4. he'll be eating a lot of pot noodles at uni, so best start practicing using the kettle pronto!

  5. Too funny! My daughter is 17 and doesn't know her way around the kitchen any better. I've bought her cookbooks, she's taken an after school cooking class but it just hasn't stuck with her. She likes to bake but you can't live on cookies. She was bragging to the family over Christmas that she can make her own Top Ramen. Oh man, is she in trouble.

  6. Oh heck.....I'm FAR from that age and was mystified by the 'electric kettle'. We just slap a teakettle on the stove here--or did, until himself introduced me to the wonders of that contraption.
    It's AMAZING!
Though I do miss the whistle of the teakettle.....

  8. John, your story has made me chuckle. I agree with the others above, make sure he can look after himself before he heads off to university.
Some of those lovely dishes you have been sharing with us recently will be invaluable for him.

  12. Hey John, EHS George will probably turn into a physics expert just so you can eat your words. Good luck, George.

  13. George will have plenty of young women to boil his kettle! Now, do you see what a bad influence you are on me?
Please tell George my son would have done the same thing at 18.

  16. Another chuckle, John, and I wondered what George drinks if not tea or coffee, obviously something that does not need water heated in a kettle. It's been great fun reading your posts this year and looking forward to seeing you online in 2013. Happy New Year!

  20. Oh dear! My 17 year old son is hopefully heading off to uni in September too, and he would be just the same. He doesn't drink tea or coffee either, just like his mum. Reading the previous comments though, I think he's in trouble as he IS hopefully going to be studying Physics. Happy New Year, and all the very best for 2013.
